Anthony Yates was born in Aston, Birmingham in 1957. After a standard corporation education he was unable to take up a place at Art School due to family circumstances. Instead he found employment as a Junior in a commercial art studio, aged 16. He learned his trade well but his calling was always to be a painter.
He painted whenever he could, studied part-time at Bournville Art College and spent many years attending life classes from the mid-eighties until the end of the nineties. By now he was exhibiting regularly up and down the country and was able to leave his job as a commercial artist and concentrate fully on his art.
Anthony Yates still lives and works in Birmingham, where in 1998 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and a Full Member in 2002. In 2005 he was elected a member of the RBA, Royal Society of British Artists.
His work was selected and hung in the Birmingham Art Gallery in 2007. In 2012 directors of the New Walsall Art Gallery selected his work for inclusion in an exhibition at the RBSA Gallery where it won a prize. He has works in many private collections both here and abroad in France, Ireland and in Oregon and California USA.
Awards for paintings have been numerous. He won the ̛̛Best Group of Paintings̛̛ prize in a Mall Gallery exhibition in 2005.
